Popcorn & Princesses: A History

Since I first started this blog about a month ago, I have been studying a short course on Blogging and Online Content with the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Learning. I wasn’t sure what to expect of the course, this blog, or myself, really.

As next week is our last, we have been tasked with writing a blog post to reflect on what we’ve learnt, and how far we’ve come with this course. I also took this course alongside another one on short stories, and I think ultimately what the last 6 weeks of study have given me, is a confidence and pride in my ability as a writer and what I have to say. It’s been 5 years since I graduated from the University of Tasmania, with a BA in English and Journalism, Media & Communications, and I was very nervous about going back to study and putting my faith in my writing abilities.

This virus has created a totally unprecedented moment in history, if you had told any of us back in January that this was how 2020 would turn out, we would have thought you were crazy! I think for me, and many others on the course, this was an opportunity to take a chance and try something new. I have always wanted to start a Disney blog, and I was worried that not living within reasonable travel distance of a Disney property, I wouldn’t have enough content for it to be sustainable. But Popcorn & Princesses is more than a parks blog, and I am so proud of the mixture of content that has been created, and of what is to come.

Our lecturer Daisy, has been absolutely fantastic (if anyone has the interest and opportunity, I really recommend looking into the course), and we have learnt so much in the last few weeks, about blogging and writing in general. From technical information, to creative processes, to marketing and legal things, there’s been so much to take in.

Because there has to be a harder way of doing things, I didn’t just start up this blog during this course, I also started an accompanying Instagram account where I post daily blog updates and other Disney related content. I am also really proud of how I’ve done with this so far- at the time of writing  I have hit over 1,300 followers, which is so exciting!

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I feel so very lucky and grateful to have the opportunity to start something that I am so passionate about and so excited to grow.

So if you are here because you are a Disney fan, because you know me (hi Mum!), or if you’re just looking for information on snack foods and royalty, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. In the words of the great Walt Disney, “to all who come to this happy place, welcome.” This is just the beginning.
